Charismatic Tee-Shirts
Going Like Hotcakes
One of the absolute hits of the Saratoga Racing Season so far, has been the Charismatic tee shirts given away by Lane's End Farm to those who inspect their yearlings.
A guy who specializes in tee shirts, Bob Fox, was especially impressed with the Charismatic tee shirts.
As a matter of fact Bob Fox was so impressed with the Charismatic tee shirts that he asked if he could have an extra large for himself and a triple (XXXL) extra large for his girlfriend.

It Always Pays
To Be Properly Shod
As most horsemen know, the difference in winning and losing can often come down to who had the best shoes. That fact was never so evident as in this story.
Stuart Janney (of Coronado's Quest fame) and Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps recently went on a hunting safari in South Africa. As both were flying from Zimbabwe to Mozambique, they encountered engine trouble in their single-engine plane. At the time, they were on their way to a very remote location to hunt the very rare African Wild Chicken.
But the engine trouble forced veteran pilot, Stuart Janney to land his Piper Cub in a field 20 miles from the closest town or village.
A clearing was found and thankfully the plane landed rubber side down.
With that over with, Dinny Phipps and Stuart Janney were looking at a 20-mile hike through some of South Africa's most desolate countryside.
The forests were thick with every kind of vegetation and the mosquitoes were as big as pigeons.
After about an hour Dinny Phipps and Stuart Janney looked to their left and saw a 200 pound Saber-tooth tiger looking at them like it hadn't had anything to eat for 4 or 5 days.
Both Mr. Phipps and Stuart Janney immediately froze in their tracks.
The tiger was foaming at the mouth and both Phipps and Janney knew the tiger could attack at any moment.
With that Stuart Janney, very easily and cautiously, slipped off his hiking boots and replaced them with a pair of Nike running shoes that he had brought along with him.
As Stuart Janney was lacing up his facing running shoes, Dinny Phipps looked at him and whispered. "Are you crazy, you can't outrun that tiger."
To that Stuart Janney replied, "I know , but I can outrun you!"

Smilin' Billy Badgett
Investigated by NYRA Stewards
Last Wednesday, Aug. 11th, NYRA steward Dave Hicks was in the Saratoga saddling area when he saw something he didn't like.
Smilin' Billy Badgett was putting the tack on a first-time starter named Be Mine in a New York-bred maiden race. Badgett carefully placed the saddle on Be Mine's withers and tightened both the under girth and over girth.
He stretched Be Mine's front legs and checked to see that the bridle was on properly.
With that all done, Smilin' Billy Badgett reached into his coat pocket and got two lumps of sugar and fed them to Be Mine.
When NYRA steward, Dave Hicks, saw that play he immediately ran over and told Mr. Badgett that he had seen what he did and would not tolerate that kind of activity in New York.
At that point Smilin' Billy Badgett explained to Judge Hicks that he had simply given Be Mine a treat--two lumps of sugar.
Then Smilin' Billy Badgett produced another lump of sugar from his coat pocket and gave it to Dave Hicks, to reassure him that nothing was afoul.
Dave Hicks took the lump of sugar and looked it over, smelled it and then put his tongue against it to taste it.
The lump of sugar had no smell or taste other than any normal lump of sugar. With that Dave Hicks flipped the lump of sugar into his mouth and down the hatch it went.
Satisfied that nothing outside the rules of racing had taken place, Dave Hicks ended his investigation by telling Smilin' Billy Badgett that everything was okay, but to keep his nose clean because the stewards were watching him. With that Judge Hicks headed back to the stewards' stand.
That's when Smilin' Billy Badgett's rider, Shane Sellers, showed up.
Smilin' Billy Badgett assured Sellers he was on the best horse. He told his rider to break and go to the lead. He promised Sellers that Be Mine would be 5 in front down the backside with little or no urging.
As the call was given for "riders up", Smilin' Billy Badgett told Shane Sellers that if he heard anything running at Be Mine late in the race, not to panic because it would only be Dave Hicks!

H. Allen Jerkins' New Diet
Ever since arriving at Saratoga everyone has been commenting to Allen Jerkens how good he looks since he lost all that weight. At least 15 to 20 people commend him daily for losing the weight.
But what we found out about Allen Jerkens' new diet may shock you.
First of all we have discovered that Mr. Jerkens himself has not backed out of the feed tub one inch.
About a month ago, Allen Jerkens started feeding his pony all the oats and straight alfalfa he would eat (which was a lot). As a direct result Clyde put on about 300 pounds which in turn made Allen Jerkens look like he had lost 20 pounds.
That's why they call him a horseman's horseman!

What's Your Handicap?
On Monday nite, Injun Chuck was attending a grand party put on John Dee and Billy Hirsch's Trackman's Golf Club.
As teams for their golf tournament were being drawn, everyone's golf handicaps were read aloud.
That's when Marjorie Cordoro asked her husband Angel, "What's your handicap honey?"
To that Angel Cordero replied, "I'm Puerto Rican, I'm black and I'm getting old."

Party Manners Yearlings Are Awesome
Claude Ray McGaughey told Injun Chuck that Party Manners was one of the best horses he ever had his hands on. Mike Smith told Injun Chuck that Party Manners was one of the best critters he ever sat on.
Party Manners had a license to be a good horse, being by Private Account, out of Duty Dance, one of Ogden Phipps' very best broodmares.
Party Manners won 6 of 10 starts including the Grade 3, Widener Handicap at nine furlongs.
Party Manners' 1st-crop are yearlings and are staring to show up at public action.
If you are looking for a good horse, and who ain't, pay close attention to these colts and fillies by Party Manners at Keeneland in September.
He could be lightnin' in a jug.

Malone's
The Best Steaks in "606"
Brian McCarty and every one at Malone's are very proud of the fact that they have become the #1 place for steaks in Lexington and all of Central Kentucky.
The local racing community has really taken to Malone's because every time Injun Chuck goes in the joint we see nothin' but owners, breeders, trainers and one extra large Sallee Van executive named, Don "Moon" Gamble.
To get to Malone's just take New Circle Road to Tates Creek and you will be two furlongs from the Lansdowne Shops where Malone's is located. With so many people in town for the Keeneland Sale, parties of five or more should definitely call ahead for reservations (606) 396-7500.

Blush Rambler's Yearlings Are Well Made
In case you haven't noticed, there are several good-lookin' yearlings by Airdrie Stud stallion, Blush Rambler, coming up soon at Keeneland in September.

Blush Rambler is by Blushing Groom, out of a stakes-winning Alledged mare.
Blush Rambler's 1st-crop has gotten off to a great start including, Trouble City who won a maiden special weight race at Belmont park.
But Blush Rambler's star so far has been Lord Flasheart, who has won a stakes race in France since the catalog.
So watch out for the exceptional yearlings selling in the
upcoming days from the 2nd-crop of Blush Rambler.

Watch out For The Yearlings By
Hermitage Farm Stallion, Pembroke
For years Injun Chuck has referred to Pembroke as "the world's fastest horse".
Why? Cause he ran 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf in 1:00 2/5 that's why. In case you're wonderin'; that is a world record.
Pembroke was a successful critter on both sides of the big pond.
Pembroke is by Gone West, out of College Bold, the dam of Nasty and Bold and Told.
Pembroke's first-crop are 2-year-olds this year and he has already had SIX (6) winners in 1999.
His upcoming yearlings are exceptional and you should make a point to look at each and every Pembroke that goes into the sales ring.
There are just too many things to like about both the colts and fillies by Pembroke selling at Keeneland in September.
See for yourself.
