Churchill Downs

Trashes Indian Charlie

For some odd reason and we cannot figure out why, but we sure do have a hard time with distribution of this publication at 700 Central Avenue.
Churchill Downs is a big place and to distribute our sheets from Central to Longfield Avenues and everywhere in between is a real chore.
One of our problems in the past has been how to get our sheets to the press box since there is no way we could ever get proper clearance to do so ourselves.
But we have worked that problem out thanks to State Steward, Bernie Hettel's kind offer to drop our sheets off in the press box on his way to the Steward's stand, which Is what has been done for quite a while now.
But now we've got a new problem.  Churchill Downs management has advised their press box people to take those Indian Charlie sheets that show up in the press box and to immediately throw them in the trash.
That just shows you what a chicken shyt outfit Churchill Downs is.
But realistically we understand that it's their racetrack and they can run Churchill Downs any way they see fit, as well they should.
And to be 100% truthful, we don't carry any hard feelings toward Captain Tom Meeker or Churchill Downs for trashing Indian Charlies in the press box.
Injun Chuck just hopes Churchill Downs doesn't have any hard feelings when we show up in Frankfort in January when we might be compelled to trash Churchill Downs and their attempt to seek alternative gaming before the 2000 General Assembly.

Tennessee-bred

Charlie O.Viar

You know, that Charlie Viar is a good guy, except for one thing--he's jealous of anybody that's got more hair than he does, which is just about everybody.
Just to prove our point we recently asked Charlie Viar to name the greatest horse trainers he ever saw and he listed the following.

  1st Lyle Whiting
  2nd Charlie Wittingham
  3rd John Veitch
  4th    Mike "Dirt" Bell
  5th Jack Van Berg
  6th  W. R. Morse
  7th Stanley Rieser
  8th Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons
  9th Leroy Jolley
  10th Plain Ben Jones

That proves it, Charlie O. Viar is prejudiced against horse trainers who have got a full head of hair.
If Charlie Viar had a horse and had to choose between Rick Hiles and Bobby Baffert as to who would train the horse, "Ol'Cotton Top" wouldn't have a chance.

Horses to Watch

If you like money, just pay very close attention to what we are about to say.
There is a horse at Churchill Downs that is training like the second coming of Dr. Fager.  And the best part is--he's gonna run in a claimin' race.
Not only that, but this critter has not been to the races in SIX YEARS.
That's right, we are of course talking about Stanley Lowenbraun's Waki Warrior who has not raced since 1993 when he was a 4-year-old.  Waki Warrior is a foal of 1989 and if we did the math right that would make him 10-years-old.
Waki Warrior has been at stud since his last race in '93 and has been lonelier than the Maytag repairman ever since.  So sometime back he was put into training by Pat "P-boy" Huffman the son of infamous trainer Lyin' Blackie Huffman.
Well, when it comes to them Huffmans it looks like the apple don't fall too far from the tree.
We know for a fact that Waki Warrior has trained like his hairs on fire since coming out of retirement.
But just to be on the safe side we asked P-boy Huffman, point blank, will Waki Warrior run good in his first race back in six years.
To that P-boy Huffman replied, "I just hope he don't bounce off his last race!"

Racing's Great Loss

In recent days, thoroughbred racing has lost some pillars of the game like Alfred G. Vanderbilt and Georgia Hoffman.
Another great loss with close ties to Kentucky racing was the recent death of Magnolia Arkansas', W. C. "Cal" Partee.
Mr. Partee was 89 years old at the time of his passing and had been an owner, great sportsman, and gentleman in our sport for over a half-century.
Without the slightest hesitation, we can say that Cal Partee was the best man any trainer could ever ask to work for.
Thank the Lord for the fact that Cal Partee got to win a Kentucky Derby while he was on this earth.
Mr. Partee did a lot for many people in racing and is held in the highest esteem by any and all who were lucky enough to know him.  In his obituary in last Friday's Daily Racing Form his family asked that in lieu of flowers make a contribution to the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America.

Even though Cal Partee is no longer with us, he is still giving to the racetrack.

Its Shippin' Time Again

A week from today most trainers on the grounds are gonna need one thing--a horse van.
Well, that means a call to Sallee Horse Vans in Lexington, but at some busy times like now, when vans are hard to get, remember, the next best thing to Sallee is Hubbard Horse Transportation.
Mel Prince, longtime ramrod for Tex Sutton is now the Kentucky-based agent for Hubbard Horse Transportation.  He knows as much about the business as anybody and the Hubbard Vans are top-of-the-line equipment.

Hubbard Vans travel coast to coast so if you've got a major move coming up and Sallee is booked up, give Mel Prince a call at the following number:  Mel Prince (606)312-6557.
